A free self-check workbook for people who own or run a hospitality venue. Score your venue across eight areas, see where the pressure is building, and leave with a 30-day plan for the first fix.
Who it’s for
Cafe owners and managers, restaurant operators, pubs, bars and clubs, hotels, motels, resorts and other accommodation, holiday parks, tourism venues, caterers, and small hospitality groups.
What’s inside
Eight areas, five questions each. You score every question 0, 1 or 2, so each area comes out of 10 and lands red, amber or green.
- Financial health: break-even, wage cost, margins and cash visibility
- Operations and service flow: routines, bottlenecks and handovers
- People, rostering and retention: whether labour follows demand and pressure shows up early
- Menu, product and waste
- Guest experience and reputation
- Technology, AI and systems
- Growth, marketing and local opportunity
- Risk, compliance and resilience
Then you add it up out of 80, pick your top three priority issues (not just the three lowest scores), and work through a 30-day action plan, one week at a time: clarify the problem, choose one change, try it, then keep it, adjust it or drop it.
There’s also a page called “2026 rule changes to check”. It covers card surcharges, weekend and public holiday surcharges, the July minimum wage increase and payday super. It’s current as at 10 October 2026, and each item links to the official source, so you can check where things stand before you act.
It doesn’t ask for your financial figures. The questions are about whether you have control, like whether you know your break-even point or whether rosters follow demand.
How long it takes
It’s 19 pages and 40 questions. Most of the scoring can be done in one sitting. Give the action plan a bit longer, and if you can, do it with your manager or head chef.
What it isn’t
It’s not an audit, a financial review or legal advice. It’s a practical self-check to help you decide what to look at first.
